Why Personal Growth is Like Getting a Facial…

When I think about getting a facial, the idea always sounds so nurturing. I go to the salon, they wrap me in warm fluffy towels and nestle me into that comfy padded reclining chair.
The esthetician comes in with her herbs and tonics. The smell is fragrant, the steam on my face is warm and the music in the background sooths my soul. She darkens the room and leaves for 20 minutes while everything works its magic.
While she’s gone, I spend the time letting my mind float. I never fail to have a creative thought or idea pop into my head and it feels good to spend time in this delicious space of possibilities.
But then, when I have slid into that Gumby state of relaxation and my pores are wide open, the esthetician comes back into the room, turns a bright halogen light on my face and proceeds to extract every bit of dirt and detritus that has accumulated since my last visit.
Under the glare of that spotlight, I’m vulnerable and exposed and not very comfortable as she works her way across the landscape of my face. But I put up with it, because I know that after she is done, I will be better off. My skin might be a bit red for the rest of the day, but after a good night’s sleep, my reflection in the mirror will show a complexion that is brighter and clearer than before.
Our personal and business growth is exactly like that. We all want success and it’s exciting to learn new content and skills that will take us in that direction. But at some point, there will come a moment when things get stuck and clogged and it will require us to dig deep and most likely, experience some discomfort.
Some people give up because that discomfort can seem all encompassing when we are knee deep in our own mud. But if we accept it as a necessary part of the process, just like extractions are a necessary part of a really good facial, we will come through it brighter and more sparkling than ever before.
Wishing you sparkle, joy and magic,
