Top 10 Barriers to Growth

One of my Platinum clients, who’s really been working all out to take her business to the next level, experienced one of those big-time melt downs that occasionally pop up when we are diving into making our dreams come true.

She was creating so many changes simultaneously within her business and her personal life that it all got a bit overwhelming.  During our coaching session, though, I was so impressed with her courageousness in staying present with her fear and doubt and not letting it create a roadblock to her success.

It got me thinking about how scary change can be as we feel new things, entertain different thoughts and maybe even leave old ways behind.  With that in mind, here are 10 obstacles that can hinder self-growth. Perhaps knowing them ahead of time can help you from getting derailed on your own journey.

1. Denial. It’s difficult to grow when you don’t see the need. Listen to the quiet voice inside and to what your heart really wants.  Get the support you need to see the truth.

2. Seeing yourself as a victim. If you’re always one-down, you can’t become the empowered person you are meant to be.

3. Compare/Despair.  Judging your own value against others is a losing proposition.  There will always be people in front and behind you.  Everything in divine time – we all have our path to greatness.

4. Self-loathing. Nothing banishes self-hatred faster than self-love. Choose in any moment the kindest path.  Love is always the answer and when we love ourselves deeply, we have so much more to give to others.

5. Blame. If we always point the finger at one another, we never see our own role.

6. Defensiveness. This is a racket we swing against anything that suggests we might be at fault. Try to see “faults” as opportunities to grow.

7. Fear. Acknowledge the frightened parts of yourself, praise your courage, and be gentle.  Fear is just the Gatekeeper whose positive intention is to keep you safe.  Ask that part of you what is really going on and receive feedback on how you can continue to move forward rather than be paralyzed.

8. Rage. Rage is a call for attention to our triggers, but sometimes we get stuck there. Accepting and working creatively with the feelings can help free you.

9. Busyness. Constantly moving allows no time for the reflection that lays the foundation for self-growth.  Too much “doing” and not enough “being” can be a distraction we create for ourselves so we don’t have to face the “thing” we know is most important.  Cut to the chase, get the “thing” done and then move on to something more fun!

10. Unwillingness to admit error. There are no mistakes, only feedback and information.  As with defensiveness, if we stop judging “error” as wrong, an ever-expanding life awaits.

So, how about you?  Are there obstacles creating a roadblock to your destination?  Need some solid strategies for designing a courageous path towards business of your dreams?
