The Energy Mindset

I was at a networking meeting recently, listening to the presenter talk about a particular client of hers that had recently “downsized” her by email.  The speaker began to laugh about it as she related the tale because in a way, she felt that the decrease in business from this client was a “gift from God” because she didn’t really like the client anyway.

My personal reaction was that she should go even further and rather than be downsized, just let the client go.  In my mind, the revenue she received from this client didn’t seem to be worth the psychic drain on her energy, not to mention the grief of having to listen to a client who apparently mostly whined and complained.

To me, everything is an exchange of energy.  The work that we do, the money we make, the love, the joy, the obligations and so on – it’s all energy, and if we are using our energy in one place, then we can’t be using it somewhere else.  If we are building our business, and we have a client that sucks the life out of us, then doesn’t it make sense to eliminate that client and use that energy to go out and get a client that appreciates us and the work we do?

I hear my coaching clients say all the time that they can’t let a problem client go because the client “pays them a lot of money”, that their income “depends on this client’s revenue.”  Well, actually, your problem client is actually costing you money because the more problems they present you with, the more time you need to spend to solve them.  If you had a client that wasn’t a problem, you would spend less time with them which would free up more time for additional clients.  More clients mean more revenue; more revenue, more money for team; more team, more time to market for clients.  Or even better, more time to NOT work at all.  When put in perspective, keeping that energy sucking client doesn’t sound like such a good idea anymore, does it?

When you decide to really create the business you wish for, ask yourself “who is my ideal client”?  Picture them in the most complete sense so that when faced with someone who does not meet your requirements, you will instantly know that this is not the perfect match for you.  This step alone will really set you on the path of doing what you love, with ease and grace.
