Creating an Effective Social Media Strategy

The term “social media” refers to online tools used in the sharing of information. Many businesses have tapped into the social media to promote their products and services. You, too, can take advantage of the social networking phenomenon but you will need an effective social media strategy to increase your chances of success. The problem with many small and home business owners wanting to go into social media marketing is their lack of a long term strategy. Know that it takes more than creating accounts at social network sites; you need to lay down concrete plans. Develop an effective strategy and faithfully carry it out if you want to reap the rewards of your efforts. So how do you strategize for your social media campaign? Here are three steps you can follow:

1. Define your brand.

Create an identity or image for your business. This is called branding and it plays an important role in any type of marketing, more so in social media marketing. Followers and friends in social network sites tend to go with the brand they can relate to. See how big companies create their brand. Some capitalize on trust while others highlight their innovativeness. Now, look at your business and define the core concept behind your company. Think long and hard about the brand you want to create. It has to be simple and specific to make it easy for people to relate to your brand and business.

2. Aim at your target market.

More often than not, those who fail to succeed in social media marketing are those who did not zero-in on their target market. A well-defined target market is a necessary component of an effective social media strategy. The shotgun approach just won’t do. Aim carefully if you want to hit your target. Connecting with anybody and everybody in social networking sites is a waste of time and effort. Focus your campaign on that segment which is most likely to buy from you. For example, if you are selling big bikes, your marketing should target bikers and those with the penchant for big motorcycles. Choose the right social network accordingly.

3. Know which tools to use.

Part of your social media strategy is defining the particular marketing tools to use in communicating with your target market. Social media sites are equipped with a number of applications from which you can choose the best tool to use in generating interest from among the members of your social network. A good example is video marketing. Your business can be known to provide informative video clips that consumers could learn from and would appreciate. Then, you can use the same apps to promote your company and your products.

After defining your brand, specifying your target market, and choosing your marketing tools, make a statement of your social media strategy. Use it as a guide in delineating the various marketing tasks you need to do. In all your efforts, however, be careful to nurture your brand and build a solid reputation if you want a strong following in your online community. Moreover, remember that as in all marketing campaigns, immediate results are very rare. Give it time but be consistent with your efforts and do not veer away from your social media strategy. You need it to remain focused and be effective in your social media marketing.

  1. Nice enews Shannon, glad you’re having such good success w/ your own hopes, dreams and goals! Also enjoyed that unlike most, you were careful to point out that social media needs to be supported with other marketing strategies – and not just branding since it can be a huge time-suck if one’s entire business model isn’t carefully created. We also now have a package that actually launches and produces a company’s social media plan for them – for those who haven’t the time but know they must get active in this medium @ allisonbliss.com/wordpress/marketing-services
